Richard,

WHY doesn't the city sleep? See if you can figure that out while you're there. WHY is Times Square packed on Tuesday at midnight? Don't a lot of those people have to get to work in the morning? Are you guys changing your ways while there?

It reminds me of being in Italy, where the apartment we stayed at was upstairs from a sidewalk cafe. Nobody eats dinner there until 9 or later, and then they stay up until the wee hours--and then they get up early and go to work! I'm a bit of a night owl and I like the first part of that equation, but not the second. I think they go home for an afternoon siesta, though, which is very civilized.

I don't think they have siestas in New York City, though.

Richard

this is written after we returned to Hilo. There is a definite time of peak traffic and activity, its from 3:00 to 6:00 pm or so. Its hard to catch a cab during those hours. People are leaving their office jobs and getting out of town. But, there still is a large amoount of people roaming the streets until the wee hours. But, not as much as during the afternoon peak traffic. It appears that these people are mostly taking in the night life together with all the support people that makes this work. NYC is mostly a service oreinted economy now. This is in contrast to the early days when it was the manufacturing and shipping hub because of Hudson river traffic. Richard
