Richard,

Thank you again for a thoughtful and information-rich post.

Is there any realistic room for investment in competitive alternatives to HECO's power generation? If you can choose to live "off-the-grid," can you choose to create and expand your own grid based on a geo-thermal model?

Competition is a strong motivator to making more rational decisions.

Richard,

I believe Helco's new "decoupling" policy push may be an even greater concern. They have very little feedback as to the best fuel now, because of their monopoly status. They will have no feedback when "decoupled".

Aloha Chuck
The utilities are protected by laws that prevent potential competitors from transmitting power across TMK boundaries. this makes it very difficult for potential competitors to get traction. It appears to me that HECO is more concerned about Oahu and have very little concern for us on the Big Island. Seems to me we have two alternatives; 1- legislation 2- co op.

Aloha Mike:
I have the exact same concern as you do. Since they will make money based on the money they spend on infrastucture, they may have no concern for the lowest cost alternative which is best for the rate payers.
Aloha
Richard
